I find that I like sad songs. I don’t think that I am a sad or melodramatic person. I think the music is pretty and pure. It also taps into real feelings. This type of music is not typically the over-produced mass-marketed stuff you hear all the time on the radio. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that music, so all my friends with Top 10 songs can settle back down.

This mix is something that I have been thinking about doing for a while. The theme for this one is heavy/sad and mellow songs. I was concerned that it would be too heavy though. Then it just sort of happened. I listen to music at night an play games on my iPhone. iTunes has this “genuis” feature that is sort of like Pandora.

I seeded the list with U2 - Running To Stand Still, and it gave me 25 songs. I like to use the genius feature to rediscover songs hidden away in my library. It turned out that a handful of the songs I had been thinking about for this mix were in the list.

The list grew organically. This particular mix has not been rearranged for flow at all. It’s strictly the order that the songs came into my consciousness. I think the end result actually has a good flow, too.

So here is the list:

  • Running To Stand Still - U2
  • On The Turning Away - Pink Floyd (how do you pick just 1?)
  • Closedown - The Cure
  • Black - Pearl Jam
  • WIlliam - Chris Knight
  • Lonely Feeling - Robert Earl Keen, Jr.
  • All You Ever Wanted - The Black Keys
  • Way Down Watson - Son Volt
  • You Think You Know Somebody - Todd Snider
  • Van Diemen’s Land - U2 (but sung by The Edge rather than Bono)
  • Look Around - Blues Traveler
  • Paint or Pollen - Blind Pilot
  • Indefinitely - Travis
  • The Engine Driver - The Decemberists
  • Hello - Evanescence
  • Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

I will upload the mix to my host for anyone who wants to download it, or I’ll be happy to burn a CD.

I think the next mix will be an upbeat Summer Mix. In the meantime, think “Summertime” by Will Smith.
