The Year Of Ruby

This past week marked an anniversary for me. We are in the midst of launching a massive project at work, and on October 22, 2007 I made a binder to help with testing this big system. Around that same time my coworker convinced (tricked?) me to learn ruby.

I had been a perl programmer for years, and was tired of it. We decided that we would push to standardize the office on ruby and the rails framework. We didn’t necessarily have the buy-in of our boss or coworkers, but that didn’t stop us.

I was able to go to Atlanta to take a class at the Big Nerd Ranch to learn rails (and some ruby). It was awesome, and I was pumped.

Now a year later ruby is the standard language. Rails is the standard framework. There are 2 of us hacking this stuff out, and we are having the time of our lives.

Hopefully we will get the rest of the guys to get on board. If they don’t we’ll just program around them, though.

I think I might play with python next. It has a couple of neat frameworks, too. I also want to look at the merb framework for ruby.

Lots to do!
